Our Grand Opening celebration for the East Valley Naturopathic Doctors clinic was a big success. Natural Allergy Relief: A Quick Q&A with Dr. Marcantel

 

Allergy season is here with a vengeance. Here in the Valley it seems like the air quality and pollen count are especially bad this year--Dr. Marcantel has patients presenting with allergy symptoms who have never had these problems in the past. Many have asked, "Is there any kind of natural relief for this?" Here are answers to some of the questions she's been hearing:

 

What causes allergy symptoms?

When an allergen (such as dust or pollen) enters the respiratory tract, the body releases antibodies that attach to the allergen and cause the mast cell to produce histamine. Histamine in the body produces nasal congestion and drainage, watery red eyes, scratchy throat, and just leaves you with a general lack of energy.

 

What vitamins and minerals can help the allergy sufferer?

While it’s important to remember that every person is unique and may react differently to specific allergens or respond differently to specific treatments, there are some supplements that can prove helpful:

  •      Zinc—Inhibits the release of histamine from the mast cell

  •      Vitamin C (ascorbate)—maintains cell integrity and reduces histamine

  •      B5 (pantothenic acid)—reduces excess mucous production

  •      B12 (cobalamin)—improves allergic asthma

  •      B3 (niacin)—slows histamine release

What other treatments do you recommend and offer for allergy sufferers?

Systemic enzyme therapy using powerful natural anti-inflammatory enzymes can often be very helpful in reducing symptoms. Also, acupuncture works wonders for many patients to reduce sinus congestion.

 

Are airborne allergens the only kinds that cause respiratory problems?

Many people don’t realize that food sensitivities can cause the same respiratory problems as allergies to pollens. Most have heard of people having violent reactions to a shellfish or peanut allergy, but they don’t think about how other foods may affect their bodies in more subtle ways. For instance, sensitivity to dairy products may cause an overproduction of mucous that leads to congested sinuses. A simple blood test can often pinpoint what foods a person should avoid to prevent respiratory or gastrointestinal problems.

Here's a tasty new recipe from one of our friends!

 

Chicken with Curry

Constance Pfeffer

 

Lots of great fiber, protein, and antioxidants in this yummy-tasting entree!

 

1 cup Dr. Marcantel's vegetable soup

3 slices toasted Ezekiel's bread (may use whole wheat)

2 chicken breasts

1/2 cup chopped onions

1 pod chopped garlic

powdered curry

salt and pepper to taste

 low salt soy sauce

2 cups brown rice

 

Sautee onions and garlic in pan. Put toasted bread into blender on high to make coarse bread crumbs. Cut chicken breast into 2" thick pieces and roll them into bread crumbs. Sautee chicken together with onion and garlic. Add rice. Mix 1 teaspoon curry powder into soup. When chicken is brown, add 1 cup soup with curry and simmer. Add salt and pepper and soy sauce to taste. Simmer for 15 minutes longer. (Serves 3-4 people.)
