Welcome to our video series, “Children of the Chakras: A Return to Self-Love”! I’m Dr. Tina Marcantel.
Have you ever found yourself struggling with issues of TRUST? Perhaps you have difficulty trusting other people, or maybe even trusting yourself to make good decisions?
Do you have chronic problems with your spinal column or general pain throughout your body? Maybe you’re having recurring issues with your feet or legs and haven’t been able to find a real cause for it? We’re going to explore the first or ROOT chakra and its connection to both your emotional AND physical well being.
You might want to print the lesson worksheet located in the “downloads” section of this lesson. The worksheet will help you to integrate the ideas we’ll be talking about and apply these healing techniques right away in your own life.
Let’s take a minute to look at a couple of important concepts and get a quick overview of how each video lesson will be presented.
Each of the seven chakras has an associated “spiritual truth.” When I say “spiritual truth” I mean the truth of who we are as an extension of the divine on the earth. It’s about remembering our identity and our connection with our higher power. These spiritual truths help us to function in the world.
Also, each of the chakras has related physical body parts. If we lose touch with the spiritual truth associated with a chakra, it can lead to blocked energy and possibly be the root cause of certain chronic health conditions.
In each lesson we’ll introduce the spiritual truth of the chakra we’re exploring. Next we’ll talk about the COLOR that’s associated with and supports healing energy with that chakra.
We’ll then talk about the thoughts and emotions we may experience concerning the spiritual truth, and how they relate to having an “open” chakra – one where energy is flowing freely – or a “closed” chakra – one where energy is actually stuck and not flowing.
We’ll talk about the location of each of the chakras in the body and the physical body parts that are within each chakra. We’ll look at possible physical conditions that can be caused by having a closed chakra and I’ll give you some clinical examples I’ve worked with.
In each of the lessons we’ll do an exercise where I’ll encourage you to look within yourself to allow the child within to speak freely about what SHE believes about her spiritual truth. When we allow those “children of the chakras” to come out of the shadows and be acknowledged and nurtured, it’s the beginning of real healing. I’ll close with some tools and tips you can use to help get the energy flowing freely in your body, such as the use of essential oils, positive affirmations, and other exercises.
Now let’s get started with our introduction to the first chakra. The spiritual truth associated with the root chakra is, “I am safe, I am supported, I belong.”
The color that supports us to balance our first chakra is the color RED. When I wear red it reminds me that divine life supports me.
When my root chakra is OPEN and energy is flowing freely, the thoughts and emotions associated with it would be based in TRUST. Trusting that we are supported in life; trusting in the unfolding of life; moving forward through life’s changes with grace and ease.
If the first chakra is CLOSED and the energy is dense or blocked and not flowing, we may feel a sense of abandonment. We may experience fear of changes and of the future; not wanting to move forward in life because we don’t feel safe, we don’t feel supported, we feel we don’t belong.
So how did we lose touch with that spiritual truth?
It may have been from instability in our home environment when we were growing up. Perhaps we felt a lack of emotional support as children. For example, sometimes frequent moves as a child or having our parents divorce may make us feel that we aren’t safe with changes. Often this manifests in adults as a need to CONTROL all the details of our lives and even control the lives of others around us in order to feel safe.
The first chakra is located at the base of the spine. Corresponding body parts to the 1st chakra are the spinal column, our skeletal system, the legs, and the immune system. If you think about it, the spine and skeletal system can represent support and structure in our lives.
Some possible physical conditions from dense energy in the 1st chakra could be spinal misalignment such as scoliosis and kyphosis. Also there may be problems with the legs and feet that literally carry us forward in life. We may have tight hamstrings that represent a need for control.
A patient came to me – we’ll call her Mary – and told me she was having terrible foot pain. In fact, her job required her to be on her feet many hours a day. She had a lot of difficulty walking, so this was a real problem.
Mary had been to several doctors and had never really got much relief. As we talked further, Mary revealed that her mother blamed Mary for many of her own problems and Mary felt that she really didn’t have any emotional support from her mother. She felt her mother was always judging and criticizing her.
Telling her story was really a big step for Mary. As I listened to her, she felt she was being acknowledged and she was allowing suppressed emotions to come up. She recognized that there was a lot of self-loathing and self-judgment that she needed to release.
When emotions come into the light of acknowledgement and are embraced without judgment, they become transformed from shadow into light and assist us in returning to self-love. I gave her some simple positive affirmations that she could use to change her thinking:
“I am supported. I belong. My husband and children love and support me. I trust in the divine unfolding in my life. Life unfolds in perfect ways and with perfect timing.”
A few weeks later Mary came back to see me and was amazed at how much better she felt and that she was walking with almost no pain. Part of her healing process was that she realized she needed to tell her mother the truth and had to release the relationship with her mother so she could move forward in life.
When you get triggered by something or someone, allow yourself to FEEL those emotions without judging yourself. Allow yourself to OBSERVE those negative thoughts without self-judgment.
Most dense emotions are fear based. Embrace your fears and release them with love. You WILL feel much lighter.
Now it’s time to hear from YOUR child of the chakra.
Now, some tips and tools for self-nurturing – because YOU DESERVE IT!
Essential oils are great and you can use them on your skin or add them to an Epsom salt bath. You can also use scented candles with essential oils. Essential oils that support us to balance our 1st chakra issues are often earthy smells such as sandalwood, cedarwood, cinnamon, and ginger clove.
Grounding ourselves by gardening or going hiking in nature are also good ways to get out of our busy heads and in touch with our bodies. Emotions are held at a cellular level, so when you FEEL emotions you release them from your body and heal.
One excellent tool I’ve discovered to help feel and release suppressed emotions is the power of water. Take a long shower or bath and allow those feelings to surface as the water runs over you. Have a good cry in the shower and release those thoughts and emotions you’ve been holding back for so long!
I’ll see you soon to talk about the second chakra and how it relates to your CREATIVITY!
